IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER ABOUT MEDICAID NUMBERS :The Community Spouse (CS) Resource Allowance is calculated based on the value of the couple’s resources on the date Institutionalized Spouse (IS) becomes a permanent nursing home resident. (Example: Mr. Doe becomes a permanent nursing home resident (Example: Mr. Doe becomes a permanent nursing home resident on January 1, 2013. The couple’s countable resources are $250,000. Regardless of when Mr. Doe Becomes eligible for Medicaid, Mrs. Doe’s resources allowance is $115,920 calculated as follows: $250,000 / 2 = $125,000, which is greater than the Maximum allowance of $115,920).
Single person Medicaid Resource Allowance | $14,400 |
Community Spouse Resource Allowance (Maximum) | $115.920 |
Community Spouse Resource Allowance (Minimum) | $74,820 |
Community Spouse Resource Allowance (MMNA) | $2,898 |
Single/ Institutional Spouse Income Allowance | $50 |
The CS is allowed to receive income of the IS to bring the CS up to the allowance of $2,898. The IS is still allowed $50. If the Couple’s combined income is less than $2,948 ($2,898 + $50), and they have assets greater than their combined resource allowances, the CS is entitled to an increased resource allowance. (Example: Combined income is $2,200 per month, and the couple’s countable assets are $35,00 over the allowance. Since the CS is $748 below the allowance ($2,948 – $2,000), the CS will be entitled to retain some or all if the $35,000 to make up the difference. BUT: A Fair Hearing will be required in order to keep the excess resources).
